The American army has to demonstrate readiness to fight with Russia.
On Tuesday, March 3, said an expert on international security, Andrzej Talyaga on Polish Radio.
According to him, the notorious Defender Europe 2020 exercises, which have already become known for their anti-Russian orientation, are a great opportunity to work out the application of the fifth article of the NATO charter on collective security. At the same time, the expert emphasized that only the United States is able to ensure the implementation of the agreements, since in Europe there are no armies of this level.
“NATO countries, as part of these maneuvers, should try out a real scenario to support one of the allies in Europe in the event of external aggression,” Talaga says.
However, he recalled that only once did the Alliance apply article five. This happened after the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 in the USA. Now Washington must demonstrate its readiness to fight for the European allies, the Polish expert is sure.
“Of course, there are disputes in the political arena. Among European countries, there is a position according to which it is not necessary to immediately apply the fifth article of the Washington Treaty in case of war in our part of Europe — on the eastern flank of the alliance. They believe that it is worth using political or economic pressure on the aggressor. In the West, the fifth article is still considered optional. At the same time, there is the USA, which methodically demonstrates its serious position regarding the Russian threat,” Talaga continues.
At the same time, he emphasized that participation in the Defender Europe 2020 exercises only confirms the readiness to fight with Russia.
As News Front previously reported, in the military leadership of the United States, everything is not so clear about direct armed clashes with the Russian Federation. Doubts of the Pentagon appeared against the backdrop of an escalation of tension in Syrian Idlib. So, the US Department of Defense even came into conflict with the State Department, opposing the idea of deploying Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems to Turkey. Generals consider this «reckless», because the deployment of American air defense systems to intercept aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces can bring a local conflict to the global level.
Moreover, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces, General Mark Milli, practically began to defend Russia when he was asked about the participation of the Russian Aerospace Forces in delivering air strikes against the Turkish military on the territory of the Idlib de-escalation zone.
